What does your career path look like?
I started my life as a temp at the V&A in London, after graduating and realising that the world of fashion journalism & promotion was not for me. I took all my skills learned from my studies to organise people and offices instead.
What are the main aspects of your current role?
I support the Head of EMEA iShares Product alongside a small team and coordinate the assistants within the iShares department. I am also the Founder and Chair of ACE (Assistant Community EMEA), the EMEA wide assistant Network at BlackRock.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The variety. My role gives me the opportunity to interact with people across the board and mostly no two days are the same.
What do you enjoy least?
What has been your career highlight?
Seeing the ACE network go from strength to strength and seeing other assistants reach out to fulfil their potential.
You are well known for your networking skills, what initial steps did you take to increase your network?
My first steps were inadvertent, as I started our ACE Network, not to network, but to bring about change. While trying to progress the aims of ACE, I had to get to know not only my assistant colleagues, but anyone who could help progress the network and its aims, inside and outside of BlackRock. I had to learn to step out of my comfort zone and just do it!
What is the one piece of advice you would give to other assistants?
People won’t think of you as anything but ‘Just an Assistant’ if that’s what you continue to call yourself. We are professionals in our own right, we need to act like we are. No one knows how to do what we do, except other great assistants like us. Own it!
