I have booked hundreds of business trips to Houston over the years (for the oil and gas industry it is the centre of the universe) so I was really excited to see the city for the first time myself. As you approach Houston you really do start to understand how absolutely huge it is. The buildings are huge, the streets are wide and the freeway goes on forever. Houston is 70 miles wide which makes navigating the city difficult without a car. I was staying in the Hotel Sorella, located in the City Centre of Houston. The hotel is surrounded by really nice restaurants, shops, cafes and bars which makes it a perfect location if you are travelling over for business and do not have a car. Everything you need is within walking distance.
Entering the hotel I noticed the brilliant decor, especially the artwork and the fabulous chandeliers. Hotel Sorella certainly has a good looking foyer! My check-in was swift and I was escorted to my suite by the really helpful bell-boy. The hotel has 244 rooms and suites. I was on the 11th floor, which can only be accessed using your key card.
The suite itself was stunning. For a long term residency it would be ideal. In fact you probably wouldn’t want to return home. The living area is open plan with a very well equipped kitchen, beautiful seating area with an extremely comfortable sofa and flat screen TV. The main living space opens out on to the balcony which gives a beautiful view of Houston (who knew the city was so green!). In the spring it would be a lovely space to just chill with a glass of wine and watch the world go by. Just off the living room space there is a good sized bathroom with a bath and shower and also a second bedroom with a double bed and lots of space for storage. The master bedroom, tucked away at the back of the suite, was lovely and calm with a huge king size bed – almost as wide as Houston itself! The en-suite came with possibly the biggest bath I have ever seen.
Overall the suite is really chic and the details are well thought through, particularly the hard wood floors, kitchen appliances and art work. I would recommend booking one of the Hotel Sorella suites if your boss is staying for longer than a week in Houston. The suite is perfect for a long term residency because it does have all of the home comforts your manager would expect but it can also be used for business meetings, for entertaining guests and there is the extra bedroom if they are travelling with their family. Additionally the kitchen is easy to cook in if they wanted to prepare their own food.
There are of course plenty of dining options within the hotel complex with three restaurant and bars – Monnalisa, the Bistro and the Bistro Bar. The complimentary continental breakfast was lovely and well worth getting up for especially after a good work out in the hotel gym (or relaxing in the spa).
I’ve often been told that Houston can be a bit soulless and I can understand that point of view if you are whisked from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the office with the occasional evening at a steak restaurant. This has been many of my manager’s experience of Houston but I must say it wasn’t my experience because I stayed in the Hotel Sorella.
Why book the Hotel Sorella for your boss? The location is terrific, the bars and restaurants outside the hotel make a real difference and your boss will feel like they have seen a little bit more of Houston than the usual business visitor.
