Arriving into Memphis after a long cold journey I was glad to know that I would be staying in a Doubletree hotel. I had a warm cookie, good service and a comfortable bed to look forward to. I wasn’t disappointed. The service from both the front desk staff and the concierge throughout my stay were wonderful as were the cookies!
The lobby area of the Doubletree looks great and I particularly enjoyed the pianist playing his socks off throughout the day! Guests definitely knew they were in Memphis with music filling the air!
The Doubletree was situated in the heart of downtown Memphis; close to plenty of fantastic restaurants, shops and local attractions including the Fedex Forum and Memphis Redbirds stadium. Beale Street was only three blocks away so there were also plenty of bars and music joints within walking distance. The hotel was also close to a trolley stop. The location really was perfect and I think it was the number one selling point for the hotel.
The bedrooms, unfortunately, did not quite live up to the rest of the hotel. This was a shame because with a little care and attention it would make the Doubletree pretty perfect. The rooms need to be refurbished, the decor is dated in the corridors and generally there seemed to be a lack of care – bulbs were missing from lights, the heating unit was somewhat temperamental and the view out on to the empty outdoor pool was not exactly scenic (with the hotel bins right next door).
On a positive note, the bed was really big and comfortable with a good duvet that kept me warm during the night. The bathroom products were nice and the shower worked a treat. The complimentary Wi-Fi was faultless, which is always a bonus particularly for business travellers.
The dining options are quite limited in the hotel. They do have a TGI Friday’s next door, which was accessible through the lobby. There are so many good restaurants nearby that I don’t think many guests complain about the lack of dining options although it would be nice to have breakfast available within the hotel.
The hotel has over 8,500 square foot of event space. On the ground floor of the hotel the space did look well maintained with a variety of flexible rooms and AV equipment. While I was there an event was taking place and it seemed that the hotel was completely in control and fully geared up for conferences and events.
Why book the Doubletree for your boss? Well the location is perfect both for business and leisure. If the hotel embarks on a refurbishment of the guest rooms I would give the hotel a big thumbs up – until then I would only recommend assistants book the Doubletree if their manager were attending a conference in the hotel itself. It is worth saying that the hotel is very reasonably priced so I would recommend this for your colleagues rather than your boss.
